No one blames him when Shige chooses to quit (while you’re ahead).
Yamapi has always been able to make it alone ever since the beginning of NewS. Tegoshi goes on to make a brilliant singing career with Massu, defeating critics that their genre of music would never progress very far. Ryo, predictably, does his thing with Kanajani8 and writes music, mostly for Yamapi and refusing to do so for Jin (but Shige knows that’s a lie). Surprisingly, Koyama stays with the company; stays the same as Shige’s best friend.
Nothing really changes except Shige sees them a lot less. It leaves a strange taste in his mouth, both sweet with euphoric moments and sour with doubt. He wouldn’t say that the rest of NEWS never saw it coming, because life’s always a bitch no matter how they sing about it otherwise.
To Shige, success is an intangible thing.
Success does not come in the form of silver discs that can be easily snapped. Success is not his name on his the graduation certificate, embossed in gold letters, not in his license to practice which he could lose if he were ever sued over a trivial mistake.
It comes with meaningful lyrics written together, penned with shared memories, of music stuck, looping endlessly in the mind’s ear. Success is the feeling of understanding amongst friends that they’ve had the time of their life together, and they wouldn’t give it up for anything in the world.
To Shige, he had found his first success amongst them, and he’s looking for the next.
